The biggest gift I received during this holiday was spending time with my family! However, I was surprised to receive a little early gift that meant so much! Bae got me The King of Style: Dressing Michael Jackson. The amazing coffee table book pays homage to Michael Jackson’s brilliant fusing of costume, personality, and performance that created his iconic image. – Amazon.com – The book is so dope ! I obviously love, enjoy, and study fashion. Anyone who knows me, knows I adore MJ! So this book is a combination of my loves and was truly heaven sent! All King of Pop fans, this is a must have for the archives! Check out some of the pics below and thanks Baby 😘!

Music of The Week

I had so many great ideas for content that I wanted to tackle while at home in Pittsburgh. Let’s just say I didn’t get to all of them 🙃 ! However, I do plan to capture some great images from NYE! I’m making this Music of The Week post simply because – as we close out 2016 (THANK GOD) – I just wanted to recognize the amazing Solange. Her album was so powerful and was truly one of the great gifts given to us in 2016. I love Jimmy Fallon and he had her on the show a few weeks ago and she performed my two favorite tracks on the album “Rise” & “Weary” ! The performance was so dope, please check it out! Congrats to Solange and thank you A Seat At The TABLE!

Song of the Week: Surfin’ by Kid Cudi Ft. Pharrell

Has been a wild year for Cudi but, I’m glad he’s back. Super talented and he’s closing off the year with a great album. Give it a spin! I love Surfin’ because it just makes me want to get up and dance and the message in the song is rad, yes rad. Check out an excerpt of some of the lyrics powered by Genius ! Play the track below on Apple Music or Tidal and remember don’t ride no waves… make your own in 2017!

🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

“Now, I ain’t riding no waves
Too busy making my own waves, baby
I ain’t riding no waves
Too busy making my own waves, baby
I ain’t riding no waves
Too busy making my own waves, baby
I ain’t riding no waves
Too busy making my own waves, baby
Surfin’ on my own wave, baby
Surfin’ on my own wave, baby
Surfin’ on my own wave, baby
Surfin’ on my own wave”

I am not a super sneaker person like I was once, but this was a pick-up that I felt was needed. Pusha T’s Adidas Originals “King Push” EQT dropped on December 3rd. I was able to get “shoe lucky” and cop these on Adidas.com. Super comfy, clean, and practical for my everyday move. Thanks Push!

I MISS THE OLD KANYE!

….. Straight from the ‘GO KANYE!…. No this is not a Kanye West/He’s cool with Trump/He cancelled his tour on us (still low-key upset about my Philly Date)/What’s Up with Kanye rant… What is, is a declaration of I’m simply not feeling the new Yeezy’s Man! This post is to inform you that they simply aren’t anything like the first 350’s and for that I am upset. My boyfriend who is a doll and wanted to support my shoe needs, got me the Yeezy Oreo’s ( I guess that’s what the streets are calling them, IDK). Well it’s safe to say that this is a sneaker that I can’t keep. First, the Pirate Black Yeezy’s that I was given for my BDay, were a 7.5. The pair that I received in the Oreos are a 9. A MEN’S 9! WHY, you might ask? Well the silhouette has been completely changed and they run superrrrr small! Now this brings me to my next point. How are you to know that when you can’t just waltz in the store and try a pair on?! Do people really research that much ahead of a release date to find out what is true to size and what isn’t? It’s not fair to the consumer if you ask me. How many customers are out there ordering their actual size and when they get them in the mail or score on a raffle they simply don’t fit! The shoe game ain’t right! I was lucky enough to try on a few pairs of the grey and orange Yeezy’s to know that I needed a size 9 in order for them to be a comfortable fit, but that’s just me. So I try them on and they are so bulky and made my foot look like a torpedo. The original shoe was way slimmer and more narrow, as the new shoe is just bulky and wide! I tried them on with a skinny jean and that’s when I knew…. the new Yeezy is not for me! (Pun sort of intended, but not really)…. Now that the rant is basically over what I will say is, they are SO COMFORTABLE! Way more comfortable than the originals! However for me, they are still a no. So take this post a lesson. For a shoe you can’t try on, research! This shoe runs entirely small and if you are still wanting to purchase this shoe, go a size up! Period! Its comfy yes, but for someone like me who is small, the shoe just felt and looked way to big for my frame. I’ll stick to my Pirate Blacks and hope to still come up on a pair of reasonably overpriced Oxford Tans….  That’s all it was Kanye, we still love Kanye……..?

Music of The Week

Music is like one of the biggest components of my life. I feel music. The instruments, the beats, the overall feelings that music can generate within. For me it is life changing. I used to teach myself how to play songs on the piano that I would hear on the radio and at church. I played flute so it was easy to convert that over to the piano and play by ear. I wanted to play drums, but my parents weren’t exactly with it… Major regret. I also regret ending my piano lessons, but at the time, I was doing tap, jazz, ballet, Girl Scouts, flute, choir, and basketball. Something had to give and obviously I eventually put hoops first. I intend to share a song and/or music of the week, well weekly. Sometimes it will be old songs, sometimes new, sometimes concerts I attend, whatever. Another lovely thing about NYC is someone is always here performing and I live and breathe live music. EVERYTHING!!!! Anywho, my first submission consists of the amazing Abel Tesfaye and Donald Glover AKA The Weekend and Childish Gambino. These are very good albums you guys! I seriously jammed to Childish all weekend (no pun intended, seriously). The album is called Awaken My Love and it is sooooooo soulful and amazing and I don’t think it’s what we were expecting, yet are so grateful for! I know I am. It’s feel good, dance, rub up, love, and love some more, vibe out to music! DIG IN! My favorite track this week is the opening track “Me and Your Mama”. It’s so powerful, starts off like a beautiful fairytale drifting you away… and then, bam the guitar riffs set in and takes you on this whirlwind of love and emotional craziness, ahhhh I love it! I love that Apple Music now gives you the ability to read the lyrics … Thank you Apple! As far as Starboy, look I’m not going to lie.. It’s a little too Pop for me… I like dark, slow, Emo Abel,  but it’s still a great album! The slower jams do what they need to do for me. I can’t stop listening to “Die For You”.  I’m not going to get all into it… Simply listen and read the lyrics… We can all relate to this track… whether it was a past love or current… It’s just one of those songs! Let me know what you guys think !!! I’m team Apple Music and Team Tidal so I’ve included the links below!

Moving to New York City has been such a blessing! I thank God that I am able to live in the best city in the World! BUT…. I always miss home. I obviously miss my family and friends… BUT… I also miss my sports! The Steelers played both the Jets and Giants at home this year, but the Pens always make several trips to the Big Apple to take on Rangers and the Islanders ! I was able to attend both games at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. There is really cool app that I recommend you all download called Gametime. Their mantra is, “Live It, Last Minute”. Textable tickets at last minute prices. Mobilize friends in seconds. I love it because anyone who knows me, knows I hate preplanning trips, concerts, games, etc. too far in advance. This app solves that problem and gives you great prices (typically better than StubHub – but not always). It’s dope, check the app out by putting in your city! Also check out some shots I took at the game.. I’m determined to get this camera thing down! 🙂

The Wait Is Over!

***Let Me Say FIRST! This Post Was Written In SEPTEMBER ! I still found major reasons why I needed to procrastinate… But the message is still the same! SMH WELCOME!***

I am finally launching my blog because now it finally feels right. Well, sort of. Over the years, yes years… I have made so many excuses in relations to launching this blog. I wanted it to look a certain way, feel a certain way… Do this, do that… YouTube Videos, New Sony Cameras, Lighting, the perfect background, etc, etc, etc… But today on a plane ride back from Toronto, with nothing else to do but sit here…. I decided this would be my first post. First of all let me start off by saying, thank you. Thank you for visiting my page for the first time. Thank you for all of those who have patiently waited for me to launch this blog (I PROMISE TONS OF SKINCARE as this is most requested). I have been promising it for so long that I’m sure those of you who have been waiting are probably like this girl is all talk… And you’re right I have been ALL talk… and no action …. kind of… What some of you know is that the blog has been quote-un-quote ready for some time now just sitting there dormant in cyber la-la-land. However, I let certain things and certain people distract me and derail me from goals if you will. I don’t want this blog to be some stuffy communication piece that isn’t me. I want it to be everything you all wanted it to be and well, more! I want it to be a a review of my previous work, a launching pad for new  ideas, girl-talk, fashion, memes, pop-culture, what’s in, what’s out, opinions, beauty, travel, art, tips and tricks, skincare, music, a a food, and the list goes on and on. All in all I want this first blog post to obviously be a introduction, but I also want it to be a mini-message. One thing that this blog won’t be is corny, fake, or not a true representation of me… I can’t do that, but it will be 100% real…Yet, at times, I am corny. I’ll explain here:  THE SKY IS THE LIMIT ! (Yes, I am looking out my plane window, no really I am). There will always be people doubting you, sneak dissin’ you, smiling’ in your face praying for your demise, lying on you, being fake… WHATEVER, it’s life. These moments or these people don’t define you. You hold the key to your own success and happiness is truly a mindset. You have to simply toughen up sometimes and keep it moving.  If you wait… (in this case years) to do what you want… you’ll look back and have regret. That’s from the heart. I let fear and foolishness hold me back from chasing after certain things and for what?!  Putting off Grad School worried if I was still smart (LOL, but no for real… and then I finished with all A’s …smh). Heck, I’ll admit I was even afraid to launch this site. So worrying about this and that.. I want it to be perfect… blah blah blah BOOEY! Negative thinking is a true waste of time, I am living proof. Mistakes will be made and there will be bumps on the road, again it’s life! All you can do is ask God for forgiveness, forgive yourself, learn and keep on keepin’ on. Time waits for no one, and your history your upbringing, or the things you have went through do not determine your destiny!  On this plane ride back from Toronto after meeting Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2, the brand I do Public Relations work for, It made me think of their message that they quite often share. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you had growing up. If you have a dream go after it. I am not saying this blog is my dream, but it’s apart of something I have intended on doing for quite sometime. If you say you’re going to something, JUST DO IT (Nike, thank you)!  Don’t get caught up comparing yourself to others and their timelines… When the time is right, you will know, to just do you boo….Anywhoooo (Kind of corny but not A1 CORNY), I invite you to my website, VelissaKatriceVaughn.com (has a nice ring to it, eh)!  I hope you enjoy it, share it,  comment, and simply take it for what its worth, a little piece of me.

Cheers

In The Spirit of Giving….

I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving was magnificent! Mine was spent with family in my hometown of Clairton (GO BEARS)! I didn’t want my first fashion post to be about… Oh my favorite brands are… my favorite clothes are…. blah, boring…do you even really care about that? LOL – Maybe you do…but anywho… I wanted this first post to be about giving back. Fashion has controlled my life since I was a little girl. My mom was super into clothes and fashion and she paved the way for my love of makeup, clothes, accessories, you name it! (NOT SHIRLEY CAESAR). My mom is a super hoarder of clothes. She has clothes from like the beginning of time and I used to be the same way. Last year when I went through a bad break-up, alllll my clothes were also somehow symbolic of things I needed to let go! I also knew that my plan to move to NYC was also a very real thing. In the spirit of being like, whatever about everything, I simply gave all my clothes away. I loaded up,  let’s say 3-4 big industrial black garbage bag and offed the stuff. At first I was going to sale the stuff, but I was in such a poor mood I just literally gave it all away and started over! My style is super minimalist. Not to many patterns and color ways, I am the basic Queen of the world. I have 80 solid black tees, 80 solid black leggings, 80 solid black long sleeves… and then repeat in white, grey, nudes, etc. BUT ALL BASICS. I also applied this to my going out and casual dresses, jeans, sweaters, etc. My Mommy had the nerve to call me the other day and tell me I needed new clothes because she said I keep wearing the same dress over and over again LOL! – However, 1. I posted an old pic and 2. I have the same dress, in the same color, by very many brands (HATER!). Yes I am the girl that owns 4-6 different tan turtleneck dresses that all look the same.. AND What! It’s who I am. My clothes are my uniform and they are basic and simplistic. Think of me as Michael Kors or Steve Jobs in my black basic turtleneck. Simple, sheek, to the damn point, yet always clean and classy. So yeah.. That’s my style. So back to the giving… I gave a lot of the clothes to friends and even some of my friend’s kids (because I’m skinny duh). They were overjoyed! To get items that still had tags on it.. great brands (I will not name cause I don’t want to sound like I’m stunting), just GOOD STUFF! When I look back now… I’m like dang wheres my denim dress…haha..but no.. It’s just stuff.. it’s just clothes… And I really do just repeat the same pieces or the same concepts over and over anyways! I was happy to do it! So I encourage you to give! There are so many people out there with nothing! I sadly see them daily on the streets of NYC! There are churches, drop bins, Salvation Army, and so many more places that you can go to, to donate! It will be a blessing trust me! If for nothing else, it can make room for your new threads… but trust me you will feel better after doing so. Especially if you can donate directly to someone you know! So there we have it first fashion post done. I intend to turn these into Vlogs because no one reads anymore but to knock the first one out… WaaaLah!
